Israel’s 63-d Independence Day 10 May 2011

Flag

Musing. Yesterday was Yom Ha’Zicharon – Memorial Day. At 11.00 am, Sirens sounded and the country came to a halt for 2 minutes. Motorist left their cars and stood by their side. While I stood, I thought about the 22,867 fallen over the past 63 years, although I did not know one personally (except the mother of one). I calculated that the average age of these men and women was around 20 or 21, the same age as my granddaughter, Sara. It is my fervent hope, along with all of Israel, that tis number not increase. Last night, as is our custom, we went to Allon Shevut for the Tekes. as usual, it was very well done, and very moving. The Fireworks were  blast (pun intended) and the special davening very meaningful.

The State of State of Israel is depicted as “reishit tz’michat geulateynu,” the beginnings of the flowering of redemption.

Let’s examine how the founders of the nation of Israel saw their bond with the Land of Israel and the ultimate redemption associated with it.

The Torah expends numerous verses depicting Avraham’s purchase ma’arat ha-machpeila as a burial plot for Sara.

Yishma’el and Yitzchak join oddly to bury their father Avraham.

The Midrash depicts even Esav’s desire to be buried with his father.

Perhaps most affective, is the Midrash Raba’s declaration that Yaakov buried Rachel, b’derech efrata (on the way to Efrat), so that she may cry for her exiled children and greet them at the redemption.

Yaakov demands of his son Joseph “al na tikbereinu b’mitzrayim” “dare not bury in the land of Egypt” (47:29).

Yosef as well tell people of Israel “v’ha’alitem et atzmotai mizeh,” “you will raise up my bones from here (50:25).

The Medrash says that the oath that Yosef insists upon is meant not only to guarantee his own burial, but signal a commitment, received through Yaakov, that G-d shall certainly redeem His people.

Yaakov and Yosef’s insistence on a burial in Israel, a tradition handed down from Avraham, represents his commitment to the future of the nation of Israel in the land of  Israel. His body will represent the seed that flowers into a holy nation. Rachel is planted on the “path to Efrat,” symbolizing as well that there her nation will once again grow and prosper.

In all cases, the burial of dead is associated with ultimate redemption.

The funerals of People of Israel express the belief in G-d’s justice and exaltation of His name, with a powerful belief in the resurrection. Yom Ha-Atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, is closely related to Yom Ha-Shoah (The Holocaust Day) and Yom Ha-Zikaron (The Memorial Day). In our tradition and history, death and redemption are often intimately intertwined.

The metaphor, depicting redemption as agricultural growth, encompasses an opportunity and inspiration. A young plant in its early stages is easily cut down, its potential easily squandered.

Yet the farmer who protects, waters, and cares for this young plant increases its chances of survival and may ultimately harvest its fruit.

And we pray that by committing ourselves to the People of Israel and the Land of Israel we will eventually come to see the State of Israel as a powerful fruit-bearing tree of redemption.

And now a little bit if Hebrew:

(YOM ATZMAUT)

We would like to dwell a bit on the Hebrew word – independence – ATZMAUT עצמאות

The root of the word is ETZEM

עצם
The word ETZEM has several meanings.
For instance: bone, an item in nature, strength, essence, core. This meaning of “essence” and “core” is the root of the word ATZMAUT independence.

Osama

America, Obama, Osama, conspiracy, Birther : Dry Bones cartoon.
I woke up this morning to the welcome news that mass murderer Osama Bin Laden had been taken out. Naturally I had to do a cartoon, but then the “Burial at Sea” story broke.Where in the world will this latest development take us?! Will this be the basis of a new rift in America? Is America in for yet another conspiracy war?!!

Right now I’m in my studio doing a ton of cartoons before leaving for a U.S. lecture tour.I’ll be in America on my “Dry Bones Campaign to turn Z Street into the Grass Roots Zionist Movement that America Needs”, and to explain my YIISA (Yale Initiative for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism) “Secret Codes” findings.

The Media Campaign

Donald Trump. Glenn Beck, Campaign, Obama, 2012, Presidency, Republican, U.S., elections: Dry Bones cartoon.
Up until now there have been three people whose names in a cartoon are enough to stimulate angry responses. The three are Pollard, Obama, and Glenn Beck.

1- Any use of the President’s middle name brands me as a racist!

2- Any discussion of Pollard and his abandonment by the Jewish “powers that be” both in America and the Israeli government here in the Middle East always brings an angry response or two.

3- Any defense of Glenn Beck brings advice that I should not be deceived by this fascist antisemitic demagogue.

Suddenly a fourth name has been added (by the Main Stream Media) to the list of names you can’t say without hitting a “nerve”: Donald Trump.

* * *

For some reason the situation reminds me of George Carlin’s classic Seven Dirty Words You Can’t Say On TV routine from 1972.

I came to Israel in 1971 and started Dry Bones in 1973. But unlike Carlin I never intended to shock. I wanted (and still want) to win folks to my “side” by allowing them to “see” my point of view through humor. So the offensiveness of the three (now four) names creates a real problem for me.

The Lone Ranger Visits Paris

According to the (British) Telegraph:

French burka ban: police arrest two veiled women
French police arrested two veiled women this morning just hours after the country’s new ban on wearing the burka in public came into force.
By Peter Allen, in Paris 11:03AM BST 11 Apr 2011

The women were arrested along with several other people protesting in front of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris against the new law.

Journalists at the scene said the arrests came after police moved in to break up the protest which had not been authorized.

On Saturday police arrested 59 people, including 19 veiled women, who turned up for a banned protest in Paris against the draconian new law, the first of its kind to be enforced in Europe.

Earlier, French police said they will be enforcing the country’s new burka ban “extremely cautiously” because of fears of provoking violence.

They fear Muslims extremists will use the law to provoke fights with officers, while rich visitors from countries like Saudi Arabia will also cause trouble .

All garments which cover the face were officially banned from first thing this morning, with offenders facing fines of 150 euros (£133).

But police admitted that they feared being accused of discrimination against Muslims, whether approaching women in tinderbox housing projects or on the Champs Elysee. -more

Credit Rating

credit rating, economy, economic crisis, recession, Standard and Poor, U.S. : Dry Bones cartoon.
Living outside of the United States you tend to think of a lot of prices in U.S. Dollars. It’s a stable international measure of value.

Living outside of the United States has now become a really good way to watch the fall of the U.S. Dollar. On our daily TV news shows, we are shown just how many Israeli Sheqels one Dollar will buy today. A stable Dollar and an American economic recovery is what we need. But what we just got was the news that Uncle Sam’s credit rating has been lowered!

Yikes!

Changing times.
2011.
